ABAP,
Inc. Ensures Integrity in Psychoanalytic Training
Accreditation is a unique
time-tested feature of American psychoanalytic education. Its purposes
are to maintain and improve the quality of educational performance and
safeguard the public from educational programs of unacceptable quality
and from inadequate educational practices. These goals are achieved through
the voluntary association of psychoanalytic educators and other professional
persons. This association provides careful scrutiny of educational practices
and imposes sanctions; yet it operates in ways consistent with traditional
autonomy and freedom of individual schools.
The American
Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis, Inc. plays a leadership role
in this process. Its task is to monitor the accrediting process and insure
that, as it is carried on, it is conducted effectively and responsibly
in the interests of the students who are being educated and of the general
public. The full and equitable participation of psychoanalytic institutions
and public representatives results in an effective forum for programs
to deal with their mutual and separate concerns in accreditation and to
formulate, debate, forward and implement policy positions.
Accreditation
as a Substantial Equivalence to State Licensure Qualification
Each accredited institute/program has
a vote in the Assembly of Psychoanalytic Institutes which adopts changes
in accreditation standards through consensus. The API has added a qualification
to an existing standard regarding formal authority or incorporation from
a state to also read, The training program is in compliance with particular
state licensing and educational requirements. The API wanted accreditation
to respect the NYS educational requirements for licensure qualifying programs
without imposing such requirements upon programs in other states. Recent
correspondence from Albany requests accredited programs outside of NYS
should convey their desire to be registered in NYS to the new State Board
for Mental Health Practitioners DHamilto@mail.nysed.gov.
The state requirements can be found on the web at http://www.op.nysed.gov.
